Tips and Tricks to Creating A Fun and Easy Chocolate Fondue Party!
There is nothing quite like a fondue to add a touch of sophistication and class to any soiree. When you add chocolate into the mix, the possibilities are limitless! Making a great fondue isn’t terribly difficult, but it does take time, patience and the right ingredients and tools. Making the party happen…well, that takes a little bit more planning, but with the right mix of people and treats, the possibilities are limitless. We’re going to focus on chocolate, of course, but you can apply the same basic ideas to any fondue party and finish off the evening with the dessert course. Determine how many people you’ll have.
For a date night, a recipe that yields 8oz of chocolate sauce should be just about ideal. For a rough calculation, estimate between 2-4oz of chocolate sauce per person, because some people are watching their weight or prefer not to overindulge in sweets. The good news is, if you have leftover sauce, you can add hot milk, half-and-half or cream to make a rich, delicious hot chocolate later or repurpose the remainder into other desserts!
Keep the foods bite-sized.
What kinds of foods can you use for your chocolate fondue party?
- Pound cake (in 1” cubes)
- Angel food cake (in 1” cubes)
- Devil’s food cake (in 1” cubes)
- Apple wedges
- Banana slices or spears*
- Kiwi slices
- Miniature cupcakes
- Orange sections
- Pear wedges
- Pineapple chunks or spears*
- Various Melons
*Can also be grilled before serving, if desired
Would you like to add some extra zing to your fondue? Try including some toppers, such as:
- candy sprinkles
- chocolate shavings
- chopped almonds or pecans
- crushed cookie pieces
- finely chopped dried fruit
- miniature marshmallows
- sea salt
Some foods are best, finger dipped into the fondue, but you may want to provide fondue forks or bamboo skewers for appropriate dipping foods. If double-dipping is a concern, ramekins are a great, quick solution that allows each guest to portion out their own sauce without risk of contaminating the communal pot and still permits you to keep the dipping food sizes uniform.
What kind of chocolate?
The kind of chocolate you want to serve will depend on a number of factors. Foods with a sweeter taste will pair better with dark or semisweet chocolate while foods with a milder flavor will pair better with milk or white chocolate. Strawberries make an interesting test for this because they have a fairly balanced taste that pairs well with just about any kind of chocolate. By deciding where strawberries fall on your personal palate, you can choose whether to lean toward darker and less sweet or lighter, sweeter chocolate options.

Fondue Made Easy
Slow Cooker Chocolate (Source: Tipnut.com)
12 ounces dark chocolate
1 cup heavy cream
3 TBS butter
- Cut or break chocolate into pieces and place in the crockpot.
- Add butter, cream and rest of the ingredients. Stir it up to mix.
- Cover the slow cooker and set to low, allow to heat for about 2 hours until the chocolate is melted. Stir once or twice while heating.
- Once melted, whisk for a bit to completely mix the ingredients.
Yield: Approximately 6 servings.
Optional Flavorings (choose one):
- 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
- 3 TBS Brandy or Irish Cream, or Amaretto or Rum
- 3 TBS Coffee Liqueur, Orange Liqueur, Mint Liqueur
How casual or formal you want to go with your presentation depends in large part on how many people you have, their age ranges and tastes. There’s no such thing as a “wrong” way to present your fondue, so long as it meshes with the theme of the evening. For example, it’s probably not a great idea to pair Styrofoam divider plates with a fancy-dress theme, but this may be perfectly appropriate in scenarios where you and your significant other don’t want to take a pause bother with a lot of dishes at the end of the evening. Likewise, fine china is an elegant choice for dressing up, but may not be a good pick for an event where young children will be present. Candles, cloth napkins, napkin rings, fondue forks or bamboo skewers are all perfectly serviceable options but do consider the guest list when deciding how best to present your offerings for the evening.
If you are having an adults-only evening, try pairing your selections with dessert-style wines, unless you have found that you like the pairing of Merlot and dark chocolate, in which case forget the experts and go with what suits you and your guests. For younger guests or in circumstances where alcohol is not desirable, coffee or a tea blend with a high acidity is always a suitable option. Try pairing white or green tea with darker chocolate and black or orange pekoe tea with white or milk chocolate. Of course, hot chocolate or a cold chocolate cocktail is always a crowd pleaser!
Bonus Tip: Leftovers!
You may find yourself with leftovers at the end of the evening. If you do, no problem! Hot cream, half-and-half or milk can be used to “revive” the chocolate, or you can scrape it out into a container and depending on how much you have, use it as an ice cream topping or as the base for another chocolate dessert. If you have other toppings left over, you can also save them and use them along with the leftover chocolate sauce if you desire.
A chocolate fondue party can be a great way to celebrate just about anything, from Finally Friday to college graduation to a special day with that special someone. It’s also a sweet way to mix things up and do something different, with an extra flair and touch of elegance. With a little planning and some forethought, you can create a fun, festive evening that will have everyone in your social circle talking for months!
